Businesses play an important role in preventing stormwater pollution. Day to day operations of commercial and industrial facilities, automotive service and gas stations, and restaurants can have large impacts on the amount of pollution entering the storm drain system when it rains. Examples of these operations include:

• Material Storage
• Material Loading and Unloading
• Grounds Maintenance
• Employee Training
• Vehicle-related Operations
• Outdoor Operations
• Kitchen Best Management Practices
• Waste Handling

To comply with the MS4 Permit, the City is required track, educate, and inspect industrial and commercial facilities that are identified as critical sources of pollutants in stormwater to ensure compliance with municipal ordinances. At a minimum, the following sources must be tracked:

• Restaurants
• Automotive service facilities
• Retail gasoline outlets
• Nurseries and nursery centers (Merchant Wholesalers, Nondurable Goods, and Retail Trade only)
• Municipal landfills
• Hazardous waste treatment, disposal, and recovery facilities
• Industrial facilities, and
• Any other facilities that may contribute to stormwater pollution, as determined by the City.

Facilities in the City’s Industrial/Commercial Facility inventory are required to be inspected twice during the 5-year term of the MS4 Permit. When the MS4 Permit is renewed, the inspection cycle begins again.
