Vice Mayor Ivan Altamirano was appointed to the Commerce City Council on March 13, 2012 to fill the remainder of an unexpired term. He was elected to serve his first full term in March 2013 and was appointed Mayor on March 15, 2016 for a full one- year term, and April 2020 for a full one-year term.

A lifelong Commerce resident, Vice Mayor Altamirano has always felt a strong connection to his community. Having faced many challenges in his life, Vice Mayor Altamirano feels he is a true reflection of his neighbors and has a strong understanding of many of their day-to-day struggles. His path has not always been an easy one as a high school dropout and teenage father. However, he attributes much of his success to his parents, the Commerce community and the programs and resources offered by the City. In fact, he believes it was the love of his parents and the guidance of his Karate instructor Mr. Gaspar that helped save his life from a path of gangs and crime. He subsequently graduated from high school and enrolled in classes at Rio Hondo Community College and Los Angeles Trade Tech.

Dedicated to helping his neighbors connect with resources, Vice Mayor Altamirano has championed many issues, in particular expanding transportation. The Vice Mayor believes with greater access to parks, programs and services, his community will flourish. He pushed to create the Citadel Express which takes travelers to and from Commerce and Downtown Los Angeles. He also initiated a partnership with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to include the Bristow Park area in the El Sol Charter bus route.

Vice Mayor Altamirano previously served as chairperson and as a commissioner on the Commerce Planning Commission. As part of the Commerce City Council, he currently serves as a Delegate for the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (JPIA), and the Gateway Cities Council of Governments. He has previously served as a delegate to the Southeast Water Coalition JPA.

Vice Mayor Altamirano is a small business owner of an air conditioning and heating repair company and also serves independently as an inspirational speaker, author and coach for many organizations including the Les Brown Platinum Speaker Network.

He continues to support his community by working with community organizations like the United Family of Bristow, the Lions Club and the Model City Democratic Club. He is the father of three children and husband to Susie who he married in July 2015.
