City of Commerce Temporarily Closes Veterans Park Facility

On February 17, 2017, the City of Commerce temporarily closed Veterans Park in order to determine the impact the heavy rainfall has had on the facility and on the lead abatement efforts currently underway. The City expects to have more information about the park’s status on March 8.

On June 6, 2016, the City Council authorized the full demolition and abatement of the now decommissioned James W. Bristow Marksmanship Range, which is located in the Veteran's Park community center. The shooting range was closed and sealed off in 2010 because of the lead associated with the operation of the range. On January 31, 2017, the City's contractors began work at Veterans Park. The contractors are currently removing peeling paint chips from the exterior around the perimeter of the building and sealing the facades.

The playground areas, picnic areas and baseball field were recently re-tested to confirm that lead has not been released into these areas. The results show that the playground and picnic areas have not been contaminated. Recent tests in public areas of the recreation building show lead levels to be within acceptable thresholds. Testing of remaining areas may be completed as early as this week. The City will also be testing nearby residents' yards.

The City is in the process of securing temporary bungalows which will be installed after the final testing of the outdoor areas has been completed. In addition, youth basketball games and practices have been relocated to other Commerce parks. The Veterans pre-school program has been moved to Bristow Park and Cross Fit classes have been moved to Rosewood Park.
